Recommendations for Enjoying AFRONTACIONES

The exhibition Afrontaciones presents itself as a space of encounter where contemporary art deploys its radical power: the capacity to generate realities from the spectator’s experience. This show is not offered as a collection of works waiting to be deciphered, but rather as a territory where perception becomes the true material—and for this reason, we recommend:

  1. LEAP INTO THE VOID: If it is true that those who leap into the void owe no explanation to those who stand and watch, then contemporary art owes no explanation to any spectator who stops to gaze upon what is exhibited. This is how art itself begins to create realities.
  2. BELIEVE: Afrontaciones is a testimony told in the first person, like the voices that say: “We grew up in a big family,” “It happened to me,” “It was dangerous for women,” “I used to ride my bicycle,” “No one would stop you,” and “You could travel safely.” Anyone who hears or reads these phrases—taken randomly from the recordings that generated this exhibition—will construct a free interpretation of what they are collectively experiencing as they navigate the narrow corridors of the gallery.
  3. EXPECT NOTHING: There is nothing to explain while you look, with or without attention to detail, during the 15 seconds that a work now receives from our gaze. What happens afterward is the most interesting part, because it concerns perception and, consequently, the spectator’s own interpretation, which will construct a reality.
  4. DON’T ASK: Words could be spent explaining the motives behind the exhibition, but we do not wish to spare you the leap into the void that is necessary as you traverse the space-time of the gallery. Above all, doing so would undermine your capacity as a spectator to construct your own realities.
  5. DO NOT END THE WORK HERE: Take it with you—in your memory, in its lingering taste, in its scent, in whatever was offered for you to sample, in the conversations you shared, and in the few or many words exchanged with the artist.

Then, whenever you wish—when you are ready—allow it to return as a memory.
